All about the beautiful Arnhem Land

One of the world's last true wilderness areas. This region of Australia is extremely remote and the environment is pristine, untouched by the modern world.

East Arnhem Land Northern Territory is a vast tract of nearly 100,000 sq km of Aboriginal owned land is one of Australia’s last strongholds of traditional Aboriginal culture. The Aboriginal people of East Arnhem Land call themselves Yolngu and today live a unique lifestyle blending the latest in western technology with timeless traditions.

Gove Peninsula

The Gove Peninsula is the most eastern extremity of the Northern Territory mainland. With its spectacular coastal landforms, extensive offshore islands and strong Aboriginal cultural connections, this region offers one of the more accessible opportunities to visit and experience remote and mysterious Arnhem Land.

Nhulunbuy

If you're a fishing person, then this is really the place for you! The area has 100's of islands, cays, reefs and estuaries teeming with marine life, all within easy reach of Nhulunbuy, a very modern seaside township of some 3500 people.

The town was built in the early '70s to service the huge bauxite mine managed by Alcan. The mine does not impinge on the town and is located 15 kilometres away.

Nhulunbuy has a variety of shops, a hospital, a library, banking and EFTPOS facilities, and is similar to a large resort town with manicured streets and parks. The town location is magic and is at the point where the Gulf of Carpentaria meets the Arafura Sea.

What is the climate like?

Winter day time temperatures are mostly around 28ºC with superb tropical nights warm enough to dine out under the stars. Rainfall is mainly from December to April with occassonal showers in the other months. Summer day time temperatures are usually around 30-33ºC.

How to get to Nhulunbuy

By Air - The airport is known as Gove and is first class. It has regular daily jet services from Darwin & Cairns with connections to overseas and domestic airlines. There is also a daily prop jet service to Darwin with same day return.
